Don, a failing junk dealer, realizes he has unwittingly been suckered into selling a rare coin to a wealthy customer for a pittance. He and Bob, his young assistant, set out to seek revenge by stealing the man's priceless coin collection in the name of “good business”. When Teach, an experienced petty thief, catches wind of the deal, he tries to convince Don to cut Bob out and cut him in setting up a situation that explores and ultimately explodes the fine line between loyalty and greed. American Buffalo is a no holds barred, hard edged, visceral play that exposes the true worth of friendship in business. In Mamet’s hands, the strong, uncompromising language of the street takes on a poetic characteristic revealing in no uncertain terms the true nature of these three misanthropes. This is a raw and uncompromising play in language and content for adults.
